Unlike standard O-rings that rely on material elasticity, the Spring Energized Seal utilizes a permanent metallic energizer (typically a V-spring, helical, or slanted coil spring) to provide the initial sealing force. As system pressure increases, the PTFE jacket is further energized against the mating surfaces, represented by the total sealing pressure . This dual-load mechanism ensures a leak-tight barrier even during low-pressure cycles or when the hardware experiences significant thermal cycling or eccentric shaft movement.

Material science is at the heart of CFKS seal longevity. We offer jackets in virgin PTFE for high purity, or filled PTFE (Carbon, Glass, or Bronze-filled) to enhance wear resistance in dynamic dry-running environments. For the internal energizer, Stainless Steel (301/304/316) is standard, while Elgiloy® or Hastelloy® is available for highly corrosive media such as sour gas or concentrated acids. This combination allows for a service life that far exceeds standard rubber seals in aggressive pharmaceutical or petrochemical processing.

One of the primary advantages of this seal is its incredibly low coefficient of friction (typically 0.05 to 0.10 against steel). To ensure maximum service life, the mating hardware should have a surface finish of  0.1 to 0.4 µm. During installation, special care must be taken with the leading edges of the groove to prevent “shaving” the PTFE jacket. Because PTFE does not age or harden like rubber, these seals offer an almost unlimited shelf life, significantly reducing maintenance inventory overhead and unexpected downtime in critical subsea or aerospace hardware.
